In this week’s Reading Journal, I want you to begin thinking about the Advocacy Project. In the AP, the rhetorical situation shifts from summarizing and evaluating the various scholarly explanations of a particular problem, to exploring and evaluating the arguments of advocates for particular “solutions” to that problem. Consider the research you have already done into your problem, as some of those sources may be useful for your AP. Reflect on the following questions:

• Choose a source that you cited in the CP and that you also might be able to use in the AP. How will the source function differently in the second essay? Are solutions or steps towards a solution identified in the source?
• Perform some preliminary research into proposed solutions, mitigation efforts, activist proposals, etc. for the problem you explored in the CP. What are some of the major reform strategies or ideas that you can identify in the conversation amongst scholars, policy writers, think tanks, or activist groups?
• How do you think your rhetorical stance might change from the CP to the AP? What kinds of rhetoric are suggested by the term “advocacy”? In other words, how do you think one becomes an effective advocate, and how can you translate these qualities into the AP?
