West Los Angeles College Social Science Paper
Description
Your “blog” will be your own posts, that only the instructor will see, about what you observed in your everyday life and how it is directly related to what you have learned through your textbook readings. Posts should be at least one page long (20 points each). Each blog should take approximately 1 hour to complete. Do connect your blogs to the textbook readings (Chapters 5-8) in a meaningful and in-depth way; your connections to the textbook are worth 40% of your overall grade. |
Your blog is an online journal with a particular sociological focus. For each blog you’ll be given options. You are only required to do one option. Please include the option number at the the top of your entry and respond to it (at least ONE page, double spaced)
Option #1: Write about an experience you had or something you saw that was interesting and then, relate that experience or observation to the assigned textbook material. This is your chance to see firsthand how useful sociology is and how sociological ideas are meaningful to your everyday life.
Option #2: Conduct an experiment. Perform a deviant act. Be as creative and imaginative as possible, but do not be agressive or disrespectful. Observe how people react to your behavior. In your blog, first detail what you did and how people responded, then use the textbook material on deviance (you also have the option of using textbook material on socialization and culture) to make sense of what you saw and what you experienced.
Option #3: First read this summary on McDonalization: http://www.umsl.edu/~keelr/010/mcdonsoc.html. Next, visit your local McDonalds. Observe and write about the following components of this restaurant: predictability, calculability, efficiency and control. Finally, identify another example of McDonaldization (other than McDonalds). Why is this a good example? )
