Robert Herrick “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time” 408
Andrew Marvell “To His Coy Mistress,” 409
Ann Lauinger “Marvell Noir,” 412
John Donne “The Flea,” 653
Billy Collins “Litany,” 596
part 1 Remember to read each poem AT LEAST three times. Stop after each line and ask what that line LITERALLY says. Then, ask what the line may mean/imply.
In order to fully respond the following prompt, your response to this forum should be a minimum of two paragraphs.
The poems this week are, in fact, love poems, and these poems do illustrate power and manipulation. You do not have to like every poem that you read!
Which poem did you LIKE THE BEST? HOW do you relate to this poem?
- As always, don’t forget to quote! Remember, when you quote poetry, the first citation uses the word line (lines 3-4). The second citation merely uses the numbers (7-8).
- Please explain HOW the poem relates to your life. Use examples to help illustrate your point.
Also, you must respond to 2 other students! As always, remember to edit for academic language, tone, and grammatical errors.

part 2 Step 1: Read the required readings.
Step 2: Choose four quotes that appeal to you. You need to quote from at least two different poems. Do you notice rhyme or meter? Symbolism? Personification? Look for words that IMPLY AN IDEA.
Step 3: Create the Introduction to the Quote.
Step 4: Decide if you are going to write an integrated quote or a standard quote.
Step 5: Write out the entire Introduction to the Quote and the quote itself with the appropriate citation (see the video for help!).
Step 6: You will now have FOUR quotes with clear introductions and citations.
Step 7: Choose one quote to analyze.
Step 8: Write three or more sentences after the quote explaining HOW the quote illustrates your idea.
