Phase III is a data recovery process that is made to specifically fit the research of the site. When comparing this to the process of Phase II it is very similar as it is really just a more intense version of Phase II, it just has more testing, more mapping, more excavation, and focuses mainly on the cultural material that was found on the site and how it is significant. This intense process is what makes Phase III though really special as it makes effort to obtain the significance of the work and findings of the site so that the information can be recorded prior to environmental changes such as destruction projects.

This whole process starts when sites are already determined to be eligible for inclusion in to the NHRP based on the set criteria of the US Secretary of the Interior National Park Services and then they are offered protection under the NHPA of 1966 and the protection of significance by SHPO throughout the United States. While these sites are potential to bring great educational displays or allow there to be further research and excavation, most of the site’s value lies within the context of the artifacts and features, which all helps with restoring the site’s past life. With this said the destruction of a very significant site is determined by the data recovery program or the process of the Phase III archaeological evaluation when there is a enough information to complete the records so that nothing is lost within the destruction of the site. Phase III most important aspect is the fact that it provides an alternative process for the final disposition of the site even if it is deemed as significant to be included in the NRHP.
