Complete Literacy Lesson Plan (TIGER)

Question Description

Literacy research has established an inter-connective relationship between reading, writing, and language. Teachers of all content areas should know about this relationship and how to foster its development. Knowledge of this relationship influences pedagogical decisions, informs selection of curricula, and affects student learning. Teachers of secondary students design comprehensive literacy lessons that enhance the curriculum and adapt instructional approaches to meet the literacy needs of individual students.

You have been assigned to co-teach with another instructor outside of your own content area. The lesson is meant to focus on the remediation of instruction to serve specific student needs.

For this assignment, use the “COE Lesson Plan Template” to create a lesson plan for the two students you previously created a literacy action plan for during Topic 3. The lesson plan needs to demonstrate your knowledge of comprehensive literacy instruction.

Design and adapt the lesson plan to include cross-curricular instructional approaches, using a wide variety of quality traditional print, digital, and online resources that meet the needs of the students. The lesson plan needs to include differentiated activities and focus on developing language comprehension, strategic knowledge, and reading-writing connections.

Note: Remember this should be a lesson you have permission to implement with a small group of students in your field experience classroom during Topic 6.

Include the following in the indicated sections of the lesson plan template:

  • Lesson Summary and Focus: Describe how comprehensive literacy will be integrated into developmentally appropriate instruction for remediation. Explain how foundational knowledge will be used to design evidence-based literacy instruction to meet the needs of individual students .
  • National/State Learning Standards and Learning Objectives: Select a standard and ensure the objectives relate to another content area’s standards.
  • Academic Language: Include content-related, age appropriate vocabulary that engages students in applying methods of inquiry and standards of evidence.
  • Resources, Materials, Equipment, and Technology: Design or adapt at least one informational text, one narrative text, and one technology resource to support the literacy needs of the small group.
  • Multiple Means of Representation: Explain how foundational knowledge will be used to adapt and evaluate instruction that will be differentiated to support students with literacy development delays or challenges.
  • Multiple Means of Engagement: Explain how the relationship between reading, writing, and language in the development of literacy skills is addressed in your lesson plan through remediation. Students should understand, question, and analyze standards-based content.
  • Multiple Means of Expression: Create developmentally appropriate assessments and explain how they align to the content-area standards and measure learning objectives.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
