1.How is Beowulf, greatest of all the warriors in the North, like/unlike Gilgamesh and Achilles? What words or deeds of his in the story make you think so? (Distinctions/differences are important!)
2.Did you watch the videos? How does Beowulf fit Campbells Heros Journey? (Youre assigned these videos for a reasonwatch them!)
- Answer this question: Why is the story of Jesus important to us today in a literary sense, as a work of literature? And, is He a warrior in any way? (Criticism/theory is important!)
- How is Jesus a heroic figure? What does He do or accomplish (what feats of courage or selflessness does he perform) that separates Him from ordinary mortals and how are these in keeping with the principles or ideals of the heroes studied so far?
5.Give one quote from one of these two works and briefly (2-4 good sentences) explain what it means. DO NOT just choose a line at random, pick something that relates to the character or the theme of the work.
NOTE: I could or would argue that a line of heroic development stretches from Gilgamesh through Achilles and Beowulf as far as Jesus as a literary character and hero. Do you see it? To go even further, therere this: When Bill and Ted say, Be excellent to each other and Party on, dudes, they are giving messages that are NOT out of line with some of the literary stuff we have seen to this point.
